from the wsj (subscription required) on collectible state quarters:

The [US] Mint’s 50-state quarter program, the most popular coin series in history, has gotten 150 million Americans involved in collecting the quarters that are honoring the states in the order they were admitted to the Union.

so let me see. assuming that everyone involved is aiming for a complete set, 150,000,000 people x 50 quarters in the series x $0.25 per quarter =  $1.875 trillion of money removed from circulation.

wtf. does the wsj really think that 150M americans are collecting state quarters? that’s half of our population – absurd. either a) the data is off (likely), b) there are some fools that are buying hella extra copies, or c) what they mean is that 150M americans have had one of the states quarters at some point in time.
